Make a TO-BE list instead of a to-do list

When people want to pursue a goal for themselves, they try to adopt helpful habits, hoping that this change will take them to the desired goal. But the reality is that the chances of them sustaining these changes are not that high. This has little or even nothing to do with what they do, but rather the order in which they do it. Before changing your behaviour, you want to step into a new identity!

Why lotto winners don't stay millionaires and dieting doesn't last

This is similar to why people who win the lottery don't end up remaining millionaires. They may have the money of a millionaire, but not the mindset. The mindset they had before the lottery does not change, and therefore they stick to destructive life habits, but in more luxurious circumstances.

The trick is to focus not only on what you need to change but also on the identity that goes with it. Changing habits starts with adopting a mindset that is in alignment with your goals. You will feel that the new habits feel more natural and it becomes easier to stick with them in the long run!

This exercise can help you with this

Take a pen and paper and fill in the following questions: 
Fast-forward time to the moment where you reached your goal. What do you see?

  1. What are you doing? How are you behaving?
  2. What are your priorities? What do you consider important in your life?
  3. Which people do you surround yourself with? 
  4. What is your fridge filled with?
  5. How do you interact with your friends? 
  6. What does your self-care look like? 
  7. How do other people see you?

If you choose to be that person already today, what do you think will happen? How will this affect your current choices and where will it take you?
